Company holiday parties are usually loaded with alcoholic beverages. I’m sure most of you have heard stories about or witnessed drunken co-workers at a holiday party. If the company does not limit alcohol consumption and you do not feel responsible enough to moderate your alcohol intake, ask if someone could help you secure transportation to get home safely.
Sometimes friends and family think gatherings should include lots of alcoholic beverages. If your friends and family offer you alcohol, ask if they can help you secure transportation to get home if you drink too much. You could plan for a taxi or designated driver service in advance.
Or, you could ask if they could offer you a bed, sofa, cot or inflatable mattress to sleep on until you are able to safely drive yourself home. For those of you who are thinking about how uncomfortable you would be to impose on someone or how uncomfortable you would be on a sofa or inflatable mattress, think about how uncomfortable you would be in a jail cell.
If you are attending parties at homes of strangers or at public venues, you should have a plan. First, it would not be sagacious to drink yourself into a stupor. Second, ask if a sober friend could attend the party with you to serve as your designed driver (DD) in case you drink excessively.
Often times, anxiety will cause people to drink excessively around strangers. You can learn about strategies to help with anxiety in the 6-A Model of Alcohol Abuse in Offenders.
Can you afford hotel arrangements? If your friends or family cannot accommodate you or you cannot find a DD, consider staying in a hotel near the party location. Have someone assist you with taking a taxi. It is not advisable to walk in the dark while intoxicated. A decent hotel would probably cost between $60 to $250 per night, depending upon the area.
If you think you cannot afford a taxi ride or hotel accommodations, you could get a free ride and a free overnight stay. You would only have to blow, walk a straight line, a wear metal wrists band, and blow again. I know this sounds like a lot of work for free accommodations. Of course, this free ride and free stay will eventually cost you hundreds or thousands in legal and other costs. Also, if you check in on a Friday or Saturday, your free stay might be longer than one night.
So, will you stay home? Utilize a taxi or designated driver? Pay for a hotel? Or, will you act like a Las Vegas high roller and take a gamble with driving while intoxicated?
Other sagacious options that are achievable is to skip the parties, abstain from drinking alcohol or drink one standard drink over a three-hour period.
